Standardized test scores and income levels are no longer the strongest predictors of graduation and academic success.  Instead “grit,” which impacts a student’s “mind-set” and how that student approaches life challenges, has more influence on academic performance.  This session will focus on how to support the cultivation and enhancement of grit in your student to assist the them in not only adapting to the challenges of college life, but thriving during their journey at UNC Charlotte.  Factors that promote student grit and positive mental health will be reviewed and discussed, as well as campus resources that can support students when challenges are encountered.

CREATING A PERSONAL PRESIDENTIAL CABINET

Students often believe they need one mentor or guide to help them navigate the personal and academic challenges of college. In reality, a student needs a support network that functions as a "Personal Presidential Cabinet," with each cabinet member advising the student on specific topics. Join us as we explore strategies for setting up this essential support system in a way that empowers students to be the "Commander in Chief" of their college experience. Learn how we are educating students about sexual violence, healthy relationships, consent and bystander intervention. During this session, you will hear about the role of the Title IX Office at UNC Charlotte, as well our upcoming events and programs. You will be provided with insight on how we plan to engage students in Title IX awareness and being an active bystander on campus and in our community. Academic advising is defined as "the intentional collaborative practices of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experiences and achieve their goals, dreams and potential." What does that look like in practice at UNC Charlotte?  Some students come in to an advising meeting with the dream of passing that challenging course this semester, while others want to discuss longer-range dreams of what their future careers look like. This session will discuss how academic advising assists the student in formulating and realizing their college experience and beyond.

In this session, parents and families will learn how to support their students in writing their “Career Success Story.” Participants will be introduced to how students can prepare for life after college by using the University Career Center (UCC) to develop valuable professional skills and engage in meaningful assessment as they make important decisions. Families will also learn about how students can connect with industry in meaningful ways, such as career fairs, mock interviews, on-campus recruiting and employer information sessions. While this session will focus on how the UCC can help their students, presenters will touch on how families can get involved and support Niner Nation in realizing their professional pursuits.
