Freshmen SOAR 2017

Student Program Information

On behalf of the University community, we would like to congratulate you on your admission to UNC Charlotte! We are sure you are excited about beginning your career as a 49er. In order to make your time here the most rewarding, you should take advantage of the SOAR Program. This program assists you with your transition to UNC Charlotte and allows you to meet with your academic advisor and register for your fall semester classes. You will also learn important information about the university and all of the services in place to promote your success.  In early April, you will receive your Freshman Brochure in the mail, which will detail everything you should expect at your SOAR session.

Freshmen enrolling for Summer Session I at UNC Charlotte must contact their academic department for advising and registration information. Freshmen enrolling for Summer Session II should attend SOAR prior to beginning summer classes at UNC Charlotte.

In order to register for fall semester classes, it is mandatory that all students attend all programs within a SOAR session. Failure to attend and participate may result in a student’s dismissal from the program. For information on which majors are advising at each session, please click here

SOAR Outdoor is an optional outdoor, adventure-based experience offered in conjunction with Venture, UNC Charlotte's professionally managed outdoor program.  Following SOAR, join a small group of other incoming students and upperclassmen leaders for five days of backpacking and ropes course experiences in the Pisgah National Forest located in the western North Carolina mountains.  Please know that students must complete the SOAR program prior to attending SOAR Outdoor.

Space is limited, so register today! To learn more about SOAR Outdoor, including cost and registration information, please visit their website. Interested in earning Fall semester academic credit for SOAR Outdoor?  E-mail Dave Sperry at david.sperry@uncc.edu for more details.

There are two additional dates available just before the beginning of the fall semester. These dates are free sessions and include a limited version of the program. Fall sessions will be held on:

Thursday, August 17

Friday, August 18

Recommended Sessions for Graduates of Early College High Schools

Specific SOAR sessions are recommended for new students who graduated from early college high schools.  On these dates, academic advisors will be better prepared to work with early college graduates and a special breakout session will be offered for students and family members.  The Director of Early College Programs will provide information on programs and services available to this special population of new students.  All graduates of early colleges are encouraged to attend one of these three SOAR sessions: June 8-9, June 13-14, June 15-16.  For additional information, contact Howard Simms, at hsimms@uncc.edu.

Privacy of Student Records

Federal law broadly prohibits the disclosure of any confidential information from student records, even to parents and family members- regardless of student's tax status or the funding of the student's education. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), enacted in 1974, has the primary purpose of protecting the privacy of student information by controlling access to, and disclosure of, students' educational records. Faculty, staff, and administrative officers at UNC Charlotte are required by FERPA to treat education records confidentially unless a student provides written consent to disclose. Additional information about FERPA and the student waiver of protection is available at www.legal.uncc.edu/FERPA.
